Assam’s Sole Woman CM Syeda Anwara Taimur passes away at 84

Syeda Anwara Taimur was the only woman Chief Minister of Assam, who passed away at 84, due to cardiac arrest after a prolonged illness in Australia.

Syeda Anwara Taimur served her region from December 6th,1980 to June 30th,1981 as a Chief Minister and she had been residing in Australia with his son for the past few years. She was a four-times Congress MLA, starting with her first election in 1972. Then she was elected in 1978, 1983, and the 1991 period as a nominee of the Congress. She held many portfolios in the educational field before becoming a Chief Minister earlier and also was a teacher of economics in Debicharan Barua Girls College in Jorhat before joining politics, she had an illustrious career span of over four decades. Previously she also served her term as a state Public works Department (PWD), Minister, from 1983 to 1985. Also, in 1988, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. In 2011, the veteran leader left the Congress and joined the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). She was astonished to figure out her name being missed in the headlines from the National Register Of Citizens (NRC).

She was the only Muslim female Chief Minister of the state. Also, in Indian history, Syeda Anwara Taimur was the first Muslim Woman Chief Minister of any state. After her name didn’t appear in the Assam National Register of Citizens, She later informed her family that the members might not have applied to get her name included in the list. In 1991, she was appointed to the post of Agricultural Minister in Assam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Condolences to the family and well-wishers of former Assam CM Syeda Anwara Taimurji. Her contribution towards Assam’s development will be remembered. May her soul rest in peace.” Assam Governor, Jagdish Mukhi said in a statement, “Saddened to know about the death of former CM Syeda Anwara Taimur- a veteran mass leader who championed the cause of politics with an undertone of people’s development. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members.” Present Assam CM, Sarbananda Sonowal also expressed condolences on the sad demise of The former CM and offered condolences to the family and prayed for the departed soul. Assam Health and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “An able administrator and affable people’s person, Syeda Mam was the only woman CM of Assam. A 4-term MLA, she had an illustrious political career spanning over four decades. My prayers and condolences.” Congress Assam unit President, Ripun Bora and the party leader of opposition in the Assam assembly Debabrata Saikia also expressed condolences for the demised soul.

She was truly an incredible personality for which, her death is mourned widely cutting across party lines. Mahila Congress President Sushmita Dev mentioned in her tweet, “Deeply saddened to know about the sudden demise of Assam’s first woman Chief Minister Smt. Syeda Anwara Taimur Ji. Syeda ji had a long public career serving the people of Assam for four terms as MLA. Prayers for the departed soul. My deepest condolences to friends and family. Also, Ruling BJP president of Assam, Ranjeet Kumar Dass expressed his grief in a message to Taimur’s family and said, “May my condolences bring you comfort and may my prayers ease the pain of this loss. I offer you my thoughts, prayers, and well-wishes during this dark time in your life.”

“May the demised soul rest in peace and her great deeds will forever be captured in the Nation’s heart and she’ll occupy the term of her memories forever.”
