Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged the people of India on 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this year as the day to make India plastic-free.
PM asked NGOs and the corporate sector to come up with ways for safe disposal of plastic waste before Diwali.
In his monthly radio ‘Man ki Baat’ he urged people to launch a new mass movement against the use of plastic and also asked to take participate in the annual ‘Swachhta hi Sewa‘ or ‘the quest for cleanliness is service’ campaign, which will begin on September 11 this year.
Prime Minister also called for efforts to ensure proper collection and storage of plastics to save the environment.
” This year on October 2 when we celebrate Bapu 150th birth anniversary, we shall not only dedicate to him an India that is open defecation-free but also shall lay the foundation of a new revolution against plastic, by people themselves, throughout the country,” he said.
